VR VR VR… It feels like we’ve been talking about it for years! But what about AR, on the other hand?

It doesn’t get too much airtime. In this video, I talk about how VR is incredible, but I’m more excited about AR as an educator. Hi, Renee Williams here. Well, firstly, what is the difference between VR and AR? VR stands for Virtual Reality.

It’s a full simulation that you access to a headset. AR, on the other hand, stands for Augmented Reality. AR morphs the physical world by projecting virtual pictures and characters through a phone’s camera, iPad, Computer, or even video viewer.

Augmented Reality is adding to the user’s real-life experience. Most of us may remember in July of 2016, Pokemon Go launched in a big way.

This was the first time that AR went viral globally after Pokemon Go launched. Although I didn’t really get it then, I remember hunting down a virtual Pokemon with my phone one night with a friend. AR showed us that year that it can captivate people of all ages. So, of course, as educators, we got excited. Firstly, we already have the hardware.

AR requires no special equipment except a smartphone, iPad, or computer, which can be much more cost-effective. Secondly, it’s immersive and engaging without being isolated. Students can use it to learn together. Thirdly, it enhances the real world instead of bringing learners into a fictional one. And finally, studies have shown that using AR increases learners’ motivation, attention, satisfaction, and confidence, subsequently improving overall results.
